the mundane

If only there was a way to stop, and look closely at these slivers of time with a different perspective, we could all find a way to thrive in the mundane. These poems are Melissa Elder looking back on her slivers.

nostalgia

The poetry of Nostalgia highlights the memories of the melancholy, the struggle, and the joy of a single life, Melissa's life. Memories that evoke feelings we all share either as the star of the show or from the front row in our journey of life. Moments that have shaped and defined us, whether we wanted them to or not.

in the quiet

This collection is an exploration of the human experience. Taking notice of the vivid, endearing and ordinary moments that give us the hope we need in humanity, if we take the time to appreciate the smaller gestures we find when we’re still and quiet.

“You cannot write without reading,
and you cannot read without feeling.
Both are indispensable.”

— Melissa Elder

following the spark

Poetry is very subjective, which is why I love it. It’s personal and individual, which makes poetry, in my opinion, quite bonding. It has the power to shape and encourage, uplift and feel seen. Which is what drew me to it in the first place. I started writing poetry for Birthday cards, or condolences. Weddings and funerals. Which then lead me to writing poetry any time I felt something defining in my own life. I’m grateful to have people in my life who supported me in my poetry journey, who chose to take it seriously and encourage me. For that, I am forever in debt and grateful.

  • "I loved this book so much I plan to purchase it for a few other of my loved ones who could use a little nudge out of the Mundane we all tend to find ourselves in from time to time."

  • "These short, sweet blurbs of words made me feel something so powerful. With just a few words put so well together, brought back moments in time like I was there again. I laughed & cried within minutes of each other. I even found myself days after reading reminiscing & wanting to open it up again & again."

  • "I’m not one who typically reads poems but heard this was a book I’d relate to. I bought it and LOVE it! Not only can I relate but these poems visually take me places. I’ve laughed pondered or cried almost through the entire book. What a great addition to my home! With in a few days I had devoured the entire book, marked my many favs and have re read them so many times to friends and family. I can’t wait for the next one!!"

  • "I loved this book of poetry, I read it all in one sitting. It has a tone of Romanticism, where Melissa embraces the mundane of daily life and picks out the simple joys. I loved this glimpse into Melissa's mind and her strong love for her family and those around her. Incredible book of poetry."

  • "A lovely, poetic, "how to" book for cherishing the daily sorrows, struggles, and joys as a full life. The poems are simply beautiful and often describe situations that we can all relate to in some way. The stunning illustrations match perfectly with the written word. The two forms of art combine to focus our attention on the small moments in life that are often overlooked. I am glad to have it as part of my library."

  • "This poetry often gives words to my own feelings and thoughts, and really resonated with me. It's a nice feeling to know that others have similar musings. It can make the "mundane" moments feel a little less lonely. Reading this felt like connecting with a friend."
